She was born on February 2, 1977 in Barranquilla, Colombia. Shakira means in grateful Arabic, she is the daughter of Nidia del Carmen Ripoll Torrado of Italian and Spanish descent and the American of Lebanese origin William Mebarak Chadid. From a previous marriage his father has eight siblings. Since she was very young she was already interested in writing poetry that would later become songs. When she was eight years old, she had to move to Los Angeles with relatives because her father filed for bankruptcy. When she returns to Barranquilla and as she confesses she thinks that it is the end of the world when she realizes that practically all of her family's possessions have been sold. She has sold over 60 million albums, has won 2 Grammy Awards and 7 Latin Grammys. She has an abundant discography. She has published eight Studio Albums.
